As web designers we must embrace all the technologies available to us and use them to compliment our design ideas. Personally I continually look for new tools and tricks that things such as css and javascript can offer. Don't let the designer ego take over, design is very important yes but never more so than usability and search engine visibility. These technologies should be considered to be our tools as web designers, use them or someone else will.

Technology, only if top up design. Technology without design (in terms of web sites) is nothing. User experience is very important, this is a reason in my opinion flash sucks. Much better is HTML/CSS + javascript. Like this quote.

Technology, Standards & Validation are definitely important for an efficient web presence. But it should should not be the first things to think off. And the ultimate goal of them should be to support content & usability, not overcome it.

I cant say about Global thinking, but here in India, where i stay, a lot of print based designers and others thinks that web is all about slicing and writing some lines of codes.

May be this is the reason.

Technology, standards, and validation are important only when design, users, and innovation are first taken into account.

In other words: Yes, I definitely agree.

Validation shouldn't be an end in itself.

Having said that, it kind of excuses all sorts of rubbishy code if we go back to not worrying about it at all.

Standards are for users.

I agree with the first statement 100%, though.

I'd say all are equally important, design is clearly neglected online but I think the over focusing on other areas is due to it still being an emerging area. Once it matures (if it ever does) then focus should either shift or even out.

Who's Jeff Croft? (remind me to search that later) Technology facilitates design. Of course we need people focusing on technology. We're doomed if we don't. But we had better have at least an equal focus on design or all that technology is useless.

Technology, standards, validation... Design, users, innovation. Two sides of the same coin. Both are equally important and deserve equal focus. This whole "new" web thing is like everything else throughout all of time... without balance it will flip itself over and over, and in the wake, too much money will be spent and too many people will get burnt.

Absolutely.

It's very much the nature of the beast though. People like metrics to judge quality on. Standards & validation are absolute. Someone with excellent skills can hold it up as a measure. Design is more ethereal. This will never really change as long as those technical measurements exist.

Part of the issue too is that the web is a new medium. We need to master the technology before we stop talking about it. As a community we're still learning how to use CSS, so the latest tricks are important. After awhile, when the technology is more mature and stable and less transient, then people will just know how to build things and worry more about the primary issues.
